Living the web way- (week-1)

The world is changing and the future will be about living life ‘ The Web Way ‘.

Starting this today, every sunday i will write about the three websites that i felt very interesting and engaging. They can be even from my from my bookmarks that i store at xmarks website. Websites may range from news to sports to gadgets to shopping to photography to tutorials to technical to technology to everything the web may offer…..

Today, i was going through the techcrunchies2009 list and found the following websites interesting.

  1. ( shopping ) – this website helps us to search the local stores for products we need to buy.You can give the ‘product name’ and the locality from where you would like to buy the product. In a flash, you will get all the info from shop address to product to specifications to its price. It is very fast and the information is good.Sitting in India, i can search for a product i would like my friend to bring for me from USA. Tell him to go to the particular shop and get it makes life easier for him.Try this out…..
  2. ( website bookmarking site ) – One of the best inventions for people like me, who browse from different places and  bookmark lot of web. Before i knew something like this existed, i would export my bookmarks as HTML page and save it as drafts in my Gmail. After i discovered xmarks things became very simple.I will browse from my office, friends room..etc – bookmark the page and press the sync button. That’s it, i will come back home and as soon as i open my Firefox the bookmarks are there updated. The bookmarks can be accessed directly from the website itself or else we can install the plug-ins for firefox and it will sync the bookmarks automatically. For all the internet worms this is a great app to re-visit the places of interest.
  3. ( your website analysis and marketing effectiveness ) – this is a very interesting tool i found from tech-crunch site.It generates a huge list of data w.r.t your website from under whom the web-page is registered to what can be done for improving the website. The free version has info about google indexed pages, meta data, interior page analysis, last gogle crawl date and social quotient of the website. The premium one has lot more features but for cost.Try this to improve traffic to your website or the user experience.

This is it, for this week.c u nxt week folks….

Weird Searches on google !!

My iGoogle homepage has a google-india hot trends app, which show the search trends in india. Two days back when i saw the list, to my surprise i founs  ‘ when will i get married ‘ search item was at No.7 in that list.

How can google show this ??

Poor google, it is a search engine which aggregates the data on internet and gives us the results. How can one expect google answer to such questions, they should turn to parrots at chennai beach or astrologers.

Still, i wanted to check what links does google show up . Also i tried the same on ( it is created for question type of searches ).Here are the results

As always,  Google’s page-rank wins the race against ask’s expert-rank. Google throwed up a quiz to findout & a horoscope page in its first two results.I found that google doesn’t have sponsored links for that. This real estate is out for sale….

Ask gave some sponsored links of matrimony websites [which are only relavent if you are searching for a bride ] & a page which says ‘ You will get married when you find a decent person with who you will talk and come to a mutual decision about children…… ‘.

No wonder Google’s  Zeitgeist has searches  like ‘ how to impress a girl ‘ , ‘ how to kiss ‘ at its top….

Swirl around with Google Image Swirl !!

A week back google launched the google image swirl,  i think it is the offspring of the similar images launched by google some 6 months back.Of late, Google is putting emphasis on image search which is previously just a dumb tag search – checking for the tags associated with the pics and showing them up in the search results page in the place of text.

Before  these were launched ,  if you have noticed it or not the image search page of Google now has an option to filter images based on color [choose show options ] . You can even find a black rose, black swan, Red Moon..[:)] . Seriously speaking ,  it is amazing – search for Taj mahal and refine based on colors, it throws up interesting results. Blue filter- Taj with Blue sky in the background ; Red filter – Tai during sunset, Black filter – black & white images of TAJ.Isn’t it interesting….?

If the above one is stunning, the swirl & similar images takes the experience to a completely different level, particularly swirl. This is where google’s USP is they make you spend time on their page to search, analyse & then reach the target page. The basic difference between swirl & similar images is as the text in the google labs website puts it is that  “swirls puts them [the images ] in an intuitive exploratory interface”.

Swirl is basically a tree with Similar images as its branches.

Swirl beta will change the way we search images, basically it is a tree of similar images allowing us to swirl around and find the right image. The images relating to the search term will form of a tree with each branch having the different images. When you click on a branch it becomes a tree again with images similar to that of that branch and when you reach the last branch a click ends you up on the web page of that image. The buck stops here for Google , it would have been too good if the last branch opens the complete image but not the web page. Google can’t do a Flickr here  b’coz it can’t directly show up the content on others pages – it has to take you there. Whereas Flickr can show the image directly, eagerly waiting to see Yahoo do something like swirl and put it up on flickr. It will be simply superb and lot more useful. Yahoooooo…hope you are  reading this one.

P.S: I tried a search for the term ‘ Indian cars’  in the swirl and it works great.Shows up all cars including an auto-the Indian luxury car [:)], different car models in all its branches. The honda city branch took me to different models and different terrains.

Try the ‘ indian actors ‘ search term and have fun, it has some very funny branches..

Hot Trends [dont jump the gun] – i meant google’s list

I got back to office after a mis-adventure [don’t ask me what] , only to see the mis-adventure feature at a medium level on the google india trends list in my iGoogle home page.Whenever i hit the ‘fox’ , my iGoogle page shows the current trends – be it breaking news, exams, jobs, gadgets, film buzz, audio release everything that happens around will be on that list – sometimes even before the news channels breaks the news, it is on my homepage. It is very exciting, sometimes they have very strange search terms and some times very silly ones. Try it out…

Read It Plain!!!

These days i am reading lot of articles on web.Who will not when its free ?.Be it cricket, news articles, blogs, gadgets, but the ads which decorate the complete page annoy [no offense to Google..] me, how to make ur teeth shine-how to reduce ur tummy-you are the millionth visitor, i can’t concentrate on these articles.

Are the Text Ads annoying u while reading articles on web,try the print button!!

I tried lot of  ways but these ads still didn’t leave me. At last i found a very good alternative, just click on the print button above/below the articles and – there it goes the plain text without any ads. Here is an example before & after. It works on all websites. This made my reading easier even on websites like ibnlive, nytimes, techcrunch..etc.May be it will help u too….
